Your Nervous System Regulates Itself - Part 2
Your Nervous System Regulates Itself – Part 2
Last week, we talked about how our nerve system is not complicated in how it works. We overcomplicate matters and then feel squirrelly and blame it on the system.
The very simple fact of noticing that we are the cause (unwittingly) of the so-called dysregulation and not anything outside of us is transformational. Your brain will then stop looking outside for a fix that doesn't exist. This short-circuits the never-ending trying to fix-a-problem-that-doesn't-exist loop.
Your body can then let go and relax.
We can just naturally flow with our feelings.
In noticing that the nature of thoughts (all thoughts) is to rise and fall, we can let them alone. A thought left alone dissolves or dies out. Our various and random thoughts do this all the time, and we don't notice. Because it's so dead common. Unremarkable. And yet amazing.
It comes down to: Where are you placing your focus? You can tell by how you feel. You can watch the stirred-up thinking rise and fall by how you feel.
We are wired to know by our feeling. Not the thought.
If you have a long-standing habit of running on adrenaline or anxiousness, it will often feel blank and disembodied when you first start unplugging from the negative-feeling thought-habits.
Stay with it. Don't try to fix anything or hang onto anything. Let them rise and fall.
If you are up for a little experiment, try this out for yourself:
Find a quiet place to sit for a moment. Close your eyes and imagine you have amnesia. You don't even know the words to anything. You don't know who you are or what has happened in your life up to this point. You aren't bothered by this. You are simply here. Now.
Feel the fact that you are alive. What does this feel like for you?
You feel curious about the world around you.
Open your eyes and look around.
Take in your surroundings with curiosity and wonder.
Notice the space around you. Notice the furnishings. Maybe there is an interesting pattern on the floor in the wood or a carpet.
Notice your body.
Are there areas that are loose and open? Notice those. Don't do anything; just be aware.
Are there areas that are tight? Notice those. Don't do anything; just be aware.
Don't try to fix anything, but if your body wants to breathe or move, let it. If it wants to be, just be.
Don't ask why.
Experience being alive without a frame or meaning. Awareness without a story.
My transformative coaching work revolves around deep presence, experiencing this peace for yourself, and how to live this way most of the time. It's a conversation that surprisingly changes everything because we go upstream to the actual source. Anything can change, and everything does.
