Hey! Wanna Ride Bikes?
Hey! Wanna Ride Bikes?
When I was a kid, we had a posse.
A bike riding posse. It was so fun.
I remember feeling so free. Like liquid sunshine in motion, speeding through the Universe on my ten-speed with the sparkly red banana-shaped seat. It was the 80s, after all.
There was my best friend in all the world, Jenny. Apparently, I'm the only one who still calls her Jenny. I kinda like that. We met when she was born, and I was 3 months old. We ran all over the neighbourhood and the woods and the soccer field and the river where you feed the ducks by the dam and back again.
Then there was my sister Laura, who is three years younger and Jenny's sister Shelley, who was in between.
The four of us, and sometimes Shannon, who lived behind the back hedge and her sister Jessica (who really was too little to keep up but seemed to do just fine anyway), would ride up and down the street and down the hill like the wind. And back up the hill all over again. If we were REALLY brave, we would go down the scary hill on the other side. And when none of the parents were looking, we would ride down the hill through the forest path.
We were incredibly alive, and nothing could stop us. Not even when I broke my arm falling off, racing down the hill, the first day my training wheels came off. I just rode with my cast on. Shel had a cast for a while, too. Before that, we used to have races on our tricycles down the hill with our legs out to the side and just let the pedals go. We must have been three years old on those old trikes. Flying.
Did I mention we all lived on top of a hill?
It was glorious.
We were so alive.
We all have this feeling of aliveness, and it never leaves us our whole lives. If you want to feel it at any time, tune in. Maybe close your eyes. Feel yourself settle like sand at the bottom of the lake. To me, it's like a live wire of electricity running just under my skin. Or a warmth in the middle of my chest when I'm quiet. I feel it when I'm around trees or water in general. It's the felt feeling of being alive.
With your eyes closed, settle and ask yourself, "How do I know if I'm alive right now?" See what you notice.
Just maybe, you'll fly like the wind.
With Love,
Sara Joy
