The Peach Streusel Muffin Paradox
The Peach Streusel Muffin Paradox
I was recently speaking with a client about creating a life we love to get up and live. They wanted to create more success in their small business but had become disillusioned with sales and marketing. Some of their relationships were effortless and a source of gorgeous, deep feelings, and other relationships were a constant struggle. They'd become confused and unsure of what made the difference or "moved the needle" in terms of creating what we would love to have.
We were having a conversation about the feeling of our deeper selves. The core of us that knows "We are okay and everything will be alright". We were looking at what we knew to be true about living and doing business from that space of peace and insight.
At first, they said, "Well, if I were content and peaceful to start with, I'd just sit on the couch all day and do nothing!". This sounded strange to me, especially since I'd seen her passion for writing, creating, and her business in particular. But I've also seen in working with a lot of different types of clients over the years, when humans are at peace and rested, in touch with our true inner selves, we get inspired. Human beings get ideas. We all do. Everyone gets the ‘just-right-for-them’ inspiration. And the best part is that, if we don't stop ourselves, we go out and bring our ideas to life.
I told her a story about how I'd said to a mentor of mine that all I was inspired to do was to make peach muffins. My version of her "sitting on the couch all day". It was August, and I'd bought 25 lbs of Niagara Peaches from a local organic fruit farm. All I wanted to do was make peach baked goods. In particular, these wonderful streusel-topped muffins. They smelled glorious and tasted gorgeous.
The only problem was that I wanted to create new clients in my business. And "everyone knows" that if you make muffins all day long, you'll only have muffins and no clients. I'd been forcing myself to do marketing activities I didn't want to do and didn't enjoy. No new clients.
My mentor at the time said if you are inspired and feeling in love with making peach muffins, then make peach muffins. It's about the feeling first rather than the activity. This sounded crazy to me.
Well darned, if I didn't have a new client email me in the middle of making the recipe! This happened three times in a row, making this particular recipe!
It's not a "magic spell" income-generating recipe.
It's the seeming paradox that when we are following our inspiration and good feeling, opportunities and interesting things show up in our lives. We then gain momentum and flow in bringing inspired ideas to life.
So, since one of the things I'm interested in is creating income from small business, I get ideas in that direction. I can then flow from peach muffins into writing blogs or advertising or wherever I'm inspired to flow.
It's the feeling first that moves the needle. It's also fun and effortless.
Her way sounds like it's going to be about having lovely, inspiring conversations with people, and in that instance, my way was baking with peaches.
