How We Limit Ourselves
How We Limit Ourselves
When I first came across the understanding of life encompassed by the Three Principles (the principles of Mind, Consciousness, and Thought), I realized pretty quickly that we live in a world without limits. Most of the limits we think are inherent in life (aside from things like defying gravity) are created by us via our use of the creative energy of Thought.
There are a lot of quotes (that I went and looked up just now on the internet) about limits and the mind. But none of them actually point to the depth of the truth around this. They stop short.
What I realized was that we are all limiting ourselves out of habits of thought. Ways of thinking that seem so normal as to never be questioned (even by the "get a better mindset" crowd). (If you think you need to change your mindset, you are living within a limited world. There is a limit to how effective changing the wallpaper is in a falling-down house).
We are the limitless energy of the Universe. Nothing less. Yes, we live in a physical world that does seem to have some physical limits. However, those are so small in comparison to how we limit ourselves just because it's the way everyone thinks about life. It's the inherited beliefs we are born into. Many of these beliefs get solidified in people's minds through misguided, though well-meaning psychological research. Or worse yet, misinterpretations of neurological research.
How we think about life, thought and limits struck me as if...
A Tale of Shoelaces
Imagine a world where everyone walked around with their shoelaces tied together - all the time. Their whole lives.
They get up in the morning, and the first thing they do is put on their shoes with the laces tied together. Even before they stand up out of bed.
They each slowly and carefully make their way to the bathroom, then down to the kitchen and painstakingly make breakfast. Go through their morning routines. Perhaps even go for a little walk outside with the dogs. Everyone knows dogs can run faster and farther than any human can walk.
Over time, people start to develop knee and hip problems. "Soreness comes from ageing," everyone says. Look at the youngsters, who have only just begun tying their shoes together; they don't have joint pain. It must be because we have been alive longer than them. Just wait.
Chronic pain comes with age. It's one of the natural limits of life. Everyone knows that.
People in this world go to various clinics to help cope with the (obvious to them) stress of being alive.
Physiotherapists prescribe exercises to help with knee pain. Psychotherapists prescribe a course of therapy to cope with the various mental aspects of life. Nutritionists recommend a diet high in protein to help the body with the normal breakdown everyone experiences.
People in this world rush around as fast as they can because it takes so long to get anywhere and no one has any time to spare. Time is precious and fleeting, and life is stressful and hard.
People are careful not to take on too much. Everyone knows that taking on too many projects is stressful.
People here dream small. Everyone knows that dreaming big creates disappointment and failure. Don't expect too much. Keep things achievable in small bites.
One day, an elderly man in his 40's was watching his young baby grandson learning to walk.
Something in the joyful way the boy moved so freely sparked the grandfather's curiosity.
The old man noticed that the boy's mother had delayed putting shoes on the boy's feet. She believed that delaying shoe wearing helped a child learn to walk. She felt the age to tie your shoes together was between 4 and 6 years of age, rather than the normal for humans 2 years of age.
Where did she get these crazy ideas?
Then his grandson did something unprecedented. He ran!
The old stories his great-grandmother used to tell him told of people who could run and even jump. But no one believed those myth stories were actually true. They were fantastical tales written before scientific thought replaced the old ways.
He'd never seen running before. He watched fascinated as his grandson gleefully moved across the backyard with unbelievable speed and ease. Without any planning or effort!
He looked down at his own feet inside of tied-together shoes.
He had a new thought that he'd never thought before.
What if I untied my shoes?
He began to feel a fear he'd never felt before. But it was mixed with a growing excitement.
He decided to listen to the excitement instead of the fear.
What if?
He looked around to see if anyone was watching.
Slowly, he bent down and started to untie the laces.
They were tied very tightly after all these years. His fingers slipped and caught on the welded-together knots.
Finally, he was able to pick apart the knots and untie his shoelaces. He sat there staring down. He moved one foot and then the other. Separately.
He stood up and started to walk. He felt so strange and dizzy. His legs felt so stiff as he moved in a way he couldn't remember ever moving before. He burst out crying without really knowing why.
As he got used to his new freedom, he would swing back and forth from exhilaration to anxiousness. He had a ton of energy like never before and then all of a sudden, he'd be exhausted.
Over a short time, his body started to heal and regenerate. He looked much younger.
People began to ask him, "What are you doing? You look great!"
When he pointed down to his untied shoes, people became concerned and worried.
"You need to tie your shoelaces together!" they would cry.
"Actually, life feels a lot better like this. You should try it," he invited.
"I could never! I'm much too busy and don't have enough time to even think about such a thing," they said.
"You can't get anywhere in this stressful world without your shoes tied together," they would solemnly state.
The now younger man just laughed and skipped away with his grandson, who jumped and leapt ahead.
They were thought by all the others to be insane. Fortunately, the man and his young grandson didn't care.
